Summers span decades. Winter can last a lifetime. And the struggle for the Iron Throne has begun.
As warden of the north, Lord Eddard Stark counts it a curse when King Robert bestows on him the office of the Hand. His honour weighs him down at court where a true man does what he will, not what he must….. And a dead enemy is a thing of beauty.
The old gods have no power in the south, Stark’s family is split and there is treachery at court. Worse, a vengeance mad heir of the deposed dragon king has grown to maturity in excile in the Free Cities. He claims the Iron Throne.
I got this book last Christmas for a present along with book two and the first DVD set. I started reading this book then but it took me a while to get the real story. Everyone told me not to read it, as they said it was quite graphical. This is probably the reason I didn’t read much of it. But they were so wrong. This book was definitely one of the best books I have ever read.
It had everything in the story… The plot was so thick you really felt you were in the times watching all of this happen right before your eyes. I loved the way George R.R Martin wrote the story as that made the story really come to life being told from different peoples perspective instead of one. The best bit about this book was the detail… So many books I have read where the details are missing and the plot gets lost. This book had so much detail especially involving the gory bits.
Warning – Do Not Read if you don’t like gore, battles, death, sexual references, fights etc.
I would recommend watching the TV series after as it really puts the book into perspective and helped me to understand the plot and what I was imagining in my head as I read the book. I would recommend anyone who has read the warning above to read this book as it is one of the best ever.
